Boundary committee narrows options

Public input sought on proposals for new high school borders

Special to The SCORE

The committee reviewing Rio Rancho Public Schools attendance boundaries will bring two high school boundary options forward for public review will seek public input and comment on Tuesday.

The boundary committee has been developing options for attendance boundaries for Rio Rancho High School and the new V. Sue Cleveland High School, which is scheduled to open in 2009.  The committee’s “Sharing and Listening” sessions will be Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at Enchanted Hills Elementary School and at 6:30 p.m. at Rio Rancho Mid-High School. Parents and the public are welcome.

The 60-member boundary committee includes parents and staff from all grade levels, a board representative, community representatives, and district-level staff. The committee has been meeting through much of November, and its work to date led to the development of options for presentation to the public.

After the sessions and the opportunity for public input, the committee will develop a final recommendation to be presented to the school board, most likely at the Dec. 17 meeting.
During the sessions, participants can share ideas, ask questions and propose changes after reviewing the proposals in small groups. The input from the groups will then be gathered for review by the committee. Written and oral comments will also be accepted.

For those who cannot make either session, the committee is accepting feedback in other ways, including:

•    In writing to a local school or to the Rio Rancho Public Schools District Office, 500 Laser Rd. NE, Rio Rancho, NM, 87124. To make sure mail is routed properly, the district asks the word “boundaries” be included on the envelope.

•    By fax to a school or to 896-0662.

•    By e-mail your comments to district@rrdo.rrps.k12.nm.us.

•    On comment forms available at all schools and at the district office.

Parents can also provide input through the staff and parent representatives for their schools.  These committee members may be contacted through the school office. Public comment will be accepted at the board meeting when the board considers the committee’s recommendations.

The committee is also beginning the process of developing options for elementary school boundaries district-wide that will take effect with the opening of Cielo Azul and Sandia Vista Elementary Schools in 2008. The committee is also likely to recommend a middle school boundary adjustment in 2008, and a full-scale realignment of middle school boundaries for 2009 when the middle schools become grade 6-8 schools and a fourth middle school opens in the current Rio Rancho Mid-High facility.

Details of the proposed boundary changes and information about the process are available on the district’s web site, www.rrps.net, at all district schools and at the district office.
