When the first crush happens
As I have stated before, my son recently started preschool. He is doing remarkably well and enjoying every minute of it. I am probably a little biased in my view of his accomplishments, but I wouldn’t be a mom if I did not believe he was exceptional.
I knew from the moment I had him, as well as my second son, that one day another woman would become the focus of his attention. I assumed this would happen for the first time in his teenage years and I would have until then to brace myself.
I was completely wrong.
Knowing his genetic makeup, and by that I mean knowing his dad, I should have known that his affection towards the female of the species would begin fairly early.
Since the first day of preschool, he has told me all about Lola. In the beginning I figured it was because her name was the easiest and the most fun to say. Again, I was mistaken in my assumption.
I think my son is in love at the ripe old age of two.
I began to suspect his feelings when I would tell him it was time to go to school and he would reply, “Go see Lola” in a coy and innocent tone.
Last week, we were driving home from preschool and I asked him what he did that day. What he said was a bit of a surprise.
“I kissed Lola,” he said.
I went along with it because he is a very affectionate child.
To play along I asked if she kissed him back.
In a very deliberate and cocky tone he said, “Oh, yeah.”
I almost fainted.
Since that day, I have been informed by other people around the preschool – and not just his teacher -- that he takes it upon himself to hold Lola’s hand everywhere they go. Not only that, he has now taken on a second girlfriend, Eden.
When they venture anywhere as a class, he has the two girls by the hand- one on each side. He even protects the girls when in big groups with the other classes.
This week he told me he kissed Lola again and she kissed him back, this time without my asking.
My husband is so pleased that our son is quite the ladies man. I, on the other hand, am just waiting for the future of this personality trait to see how it develops.
I think we are going to have our hands full.
